AP3X – Grey Area EP
Monkey Dub Recordings, MDR 018, May 2010
With the flourishing dubstep/grime movement still on the rise, one to watch out for in the local arena is DJ and producer Shane Willis, aka AP3X (Apex), who has just recently had 4 tunes signed for release on Canadian label Monkey Dub Recordings.
Straight off the back of his remix of nsu’s “Panic Bells” (out now on newclear music), AP3X delivers his first batch of original material – an EP consisting of 4 tracks brimming with dark textures while drawing on his influences and background in breakbeat and tear-out basslines, coming through most strongly on the final track “Heart Attack”.
While many will be familiar with Shane delivering intense and varied-tempo DJ sets (ranging from the most abrasive dubstep right through to prog-house) around the clubs of Auckland, the EP is a more consistent onslaught of dubstep with menacing undertones and the mood is perfectly summed up by “Corruptive Sounds” which features a sample claiming that “now, everyone wants to be making dub”. Also featuring a collab with one of the biggest names in breaks in australia under the guise of ‘Lachie Monsta’.
If this EP is signalling the opening of AP3X’s account, you better be watching out for any future transactions.
The EP is available now for purchase in digital format on Juno and will be available on beatport from July 7th.
